As part of our commitment to maintaining data quality and security for all users, we occasionally ask participants to complete a quick identity check. This helps us confirm that it's really you completing submissions on our platform.
Act immediately: You have 1 hour to begin the check from when the prompt appears and another hour to complete the check. If you miss the deadline, your access to new studies will be temporarily frozen and you'll need to restart all verification steps — including phone number, ID, and the onboarding study.
When will I be asked to check my identity?
The timing of these checks depends on several factors, including your account activity, submission history, and random security checks. You may be asked to verify your identity at periodic intervals as part of our security protocols, and this can happen more than once.
We will never ask for verification within a study. This includes requests for passports, ID cards, phone numbers, or personal email addresses. Verification only happens through your Prolific account and Onfido (an Entrust company), never as part of a study itself.
How does the check work?
You'll receive an in-app notification after completing a submission that triggers the check
You'll have 1 hour to begin the check, and 1 additional hour to complete it once started
The check involves a simple face scan that confirms your identity
Once completed successfully, you'll regain full access to your account
While you're completing a check, you won't be able to access your account page.
What happens if I don't complete the check?
If you don't complete the check within the given timeframe, your access to new studies will be temporarily frozen. You'll need to re-complete all verification steps, phone number, ID, and onboarding study, to regain access. This happens automatically, you don't need to do anything to trigger it.
What happens if my check doesn't match?
If your face scan doesn't match the ID on your account, this is treated as a security concern, and access to your account may not be restored. This is different from simply missing the time window, since it means we haven't been able to confirm it's really you.
If this happens, you'll still be able to cash out your existing balance and close your account. If you don't have a PayPal linked yet, you can still link one at this stage, though if you already have one linked, it can't be changed at this point.
If you believe this happened because of a technical issue, like poor lighting or a camera problem rather than an actual mismatch, contact us using the chatbot icon in the bottom right of your screen so we can look into it.
