Prolific is detecting VPN usage, but I'm not using a VPN. How do I resolve it?

How to resolve VPN detection issues when not using a VPN

Updated over a week ago

Prolific uses systems to detect anonymizing tools such as VPNs, proxies, or private relays that can pose security risks. However, certain network setups, browser settings, or device configurations may inadvertently flag your connection as using a VPN or proxy, even when you’re not. Below, we’ll explore common causes and provide troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

Common Causes of VPN/Proxy Detection Errors

Prolific's systems may detect a VPN or proxy due to:

  • Network configurations, like workplace, university, or public Wi-Fi, which may use default VPNs or proxies.

  • Private relay features, such as iCloud Private Relay on Apple devices, that anonymize web traffic.

  • Browser extensions, such as ad blockers or VPN add-ons.

  • Incorrect device or system settings (e.g., time, date, or location inaccuracies).

  • Cached data in your browser interfering with connection validation.

  • Mobile data or ISP configurations that utilise routing techniques similar to VPNs.

How to Resolve VPN/Proxy Detection Issues

If you’ve encountered a VPN/Proxy detection error, follow these step-by-step troubleshooting tips:

  1. Switch to a Different Network:

    1. Use a home network instead of public, university, or workplace Wi-Fi.

    2. On mobile, consider switching to mobile data (e.g., 4G/5G)

    3. Restart your mobile device or router to acquire a new IP address (note that this does not guarantee the issue will resolve as another flagged IP may be assigned).

  2. Update and Verify Your Browser:

    1. Ensure you’re using one of Prolific’s supported browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or Edge (desktop/mobile versions).

    2. Temporarily switch to a different browser to see if the issue resolves.

  3. Check and Disable Privacy Features:

    1. Turn off any VPNs, proxies, or private relay tools, such as iCloud Private Relay.

    2. Disable browser-level VPNs or extensions routing traffic anonymously.

    3. Check browser settings/extensions to disable such tools.

  4. Clear Cached Data:

    1. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies to remove outdated or incorrect data.

  5. Reduce Interferences from Extensions:

    1. Temporarily turn off or remove all browser extensions, particularly those that block pop-ups/ads or introduce privacy features.

  6. Verify Device Settings:

    1. Ensure your device’s date, time, and location settings are set correctly.

    2. If discrepancies are found, update the settings and restart your device.

Preventive Measures to Avoid VPN/Proxy Flags

To minimize VPN/Proxy detection errors in the future:

  • Always use a personal home network for Prolific-related activities where possible.

  • Avoid accessing Prolific on networks like workplace or public Wi-Fi that may use VPN/proxy-like configurations.

  • Keep your browser and device updated to the latest versions.

  • Turn off private relay features or other anonymizing tools when accessing Prolific.

  • Regularly clear your browser’s cache and review enabled extensions to ensure none interfere with Prolific’s detection systems.
