What’s a Domain Expert?

Domain Experts are participants with verified qualifications, experience, or advanced skills in a specific field. They can be lawyers, programmers, financial advisors, healthcare workers — and even red teamers or highly fluent language speakers. If your expertise is in demand, we may invite you to get verified and start contributing at a deeper level.

What’s expected of me?

As a Domain Expert, you’ll get access to studies that require your specialist knowledge. These might include:

  • Reviewing code for accuracy if you're a programmer
  • Testing AI systems for safety as a red teamer
  • Providing professional insight based on your experience in law, healthcare, finance, and more

These studies offer more than just variety—they offer better pay. We recommend that researchers pay Domain Experts $30 to $100 an hour for their time and expertise.

Will I still get regular studies?

Yes. You’ll continue to see general studies on your account, just like before. The main difference is that you may now receive higher-paying tasks that align with your verified skill set. The same Prolific rules apply—every study is optional, and you’re always in control.

How do I become a Domain Expert?

If we think you might be a good fit for one of our in-demand areas, we’ll message you through Prolific and invite you to complete a verification process. Depending on your field, this could involve:

  • A short skills assessment
  • Document checks (e.g., confirming a medical license through the GMC)
  • Reviewing your qualifications or online profiles

Once verified, you'll start receiving relevant Domain Expert studies.

What if I have a problem with a Domain Expert study?

Report it the same way you would any other study. You can find step-by-step guidance in this article on how to report a study.

FAQs

Can I be both a Domain Expert and an AI Tasker?

Yes! You can be verified in multiple areas. This means you might get study invites based on your subject matter knowledge, your performance on AI-related tasks, or both.

How can I register my interest in becoming a Domain Expert

Make sure your prescreening answers (like languages, education, or skills) are up to date. We’re currently using these to find potential experts. If you're fluent in a language or know a coding language inside out—let us know.

We’re also working on a better way to let you register your interest directly. Keep checking this article for updates.

Can I refer someone else?

Yes, encourage them to join Prolific and fill in their profile as completely as possible—especially their education, skills, and LinkedIn. We’ll take it from there. But remember, everyone must pass our verification process. Misrepresenting skills could lead to a permanent ban.

Can I be verified for more than one area?

Absolutely. If you’ve got expertise in multiple fields, you may be invited to verify for more than one.

I’ve taken the assessment but haven’t heard anything. What’s going on?

It could mean one of two things:

1. Our team is still reviewing your results
2. You didn't meet the threshold we're looking for this time

We're working on better ways to update you with outcomes, so stay tuned.
